Amateurs is a single camera hour long television series that mixes drama and comedy much in the same way as FX’s Atlanta or HBO’s Insecure and carries with it a larger message of exploitation and profiteering in the billion-dollar collegiate sports industry.
Make no mistake, the central figures in Amateurs are not victims in this equation but rather full participants in a system where the rules are ever changing and both sides have something to gain and everything to lose.
Centered around a trio of incoming Freshman at the most prestigious college basketball program in the country, this series balances universal tales of collegiate experiences with a central story of immersion and evolution that parallels the sudden stardom of many real world superstars.
Set in the heart of one of the most diverse cities in the world, this series takes place amongst the struggle and strife of a gentrifying San Francisco and as the city evolves so do our players. It’s this evolution, for better or worse, coupled with an investigation into impropriety in the program, that drives this series and sends us head long into the controversy surrounding student athletes and their unpaid place in a billion dollar business.
